Living Heritage

Melaka is strategically located next to the Straits of Melaka, almost halfway between the Malaysian capital city Kuala Lumpur and the city-nation of Singapore, and offers city dwellers a welcome break. On many a weekend you’ll see both foreign and local tourists navigating its street either on foot or rickety trishaws trying to take in all the sights and sounds. Then there are the curio seekers and antique lovers who spend hours looking through dusty shops trying to find a piece to take home. Thanks to the colorful past as a bustling international trading port that linked the east with the west, Melaka is a wonderful amalgam of cultures and traditions, which is evident in its architecture, people and food. In fact, Melaka was recently designated a Cultural World Heritage Site by UNESCO along with another Malaysian city Penang because of its historical significance. According to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre site, “ These are the most complete surviving historic city centers on the straits of Malacca with a multicultural living heritage originating from the trade routes from Great Britain and Europe through the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent and the Malay Archipelago to China.

However, Phornsiri Manoharn, TAT’s Governor hopes the invitation project, the biggest familiarization trip campaign ever in Thailand to boost inbound tourism traffic, will turn things around. Manoharan stresses, “The success of the project is considered a big mission for the country, which is why a total of 62 agencies have joined forces to make it happen.
